Can You Pass The WordPress Maintenance Test

Many website owners still do not understand the WordPress maintenance needs of their website. Can you pass the simple test below in regards to your WordPress website maintenance?

Question 1: Who is currently maintaining your WordPress website?

Do you know who is currently maintaining your website? Are you doing it yourself, is a staff member performing maintenance, maybe it is your website designer? If you do not know who is currently looking after your website I suggest you get clear on this ASAP.

Question 2: When was the last maintenance completed?

Ok, now that you know who is performing the maintenance it’s important to know when the last maintenance was completed. I suggest scheduling a time to have your updates and maintenance completed at minimum once per month (if your site doesn’t change much) or weekly (if your site s regularly changed). If you don’t have an appropriate schedule it’s time to get clear on a plan today!

Question 3: How often are things backed up?

Your WordPress website should be getting backed up regularly with both full and/or incremental backups. These backups should always be stored away from your website. This will help to protect your website and intellectual property. Regular backups are also great to have if the worst case hacking scenario ever happens. For sites that are not regularly updated or changed, I suggest minimum weekly backups. For sites with high traffic and lots of regular content then daily backups should be made at the minimum.

Question 4: Do you know when your website is offline?

Website hosting servers are machines and as such, they are not infallible. They do need maintenance and support just like your website does. From time to time website hosting does go offline and this can affect your website visibility. Make sure to set up some uptime monitoring on your website so that you know when your website is offline and for how long. If your site is seeing lots of regular downtimes it might be time to move to a better quality hosting or talk to your existing host.

Question 5: Security monitoring is important!

Finally, make sure your website is monitored regularly for security risks. This means making sure that security monitoring is installed and active at all times. This will not only help to keep your website secure but will let you know when something needs to be looked at more in depth.
