When someone sends you an email they are knocking on your door. And when you open the attachment, without looking though the peephole to see who it is, you just opened the door and let a stranger into your life, where everything you care about is – James Comey
Basically what James is saying that if you open an email attachment without the right protection – there could be a virus in there which can infiltrate your computer, finding all the information someone would need to drain your bank accounts, steal your identity, take all your data. You do not want that to happen obviously so you need to protect yourself.
First way to protect yourself from letting an intruder into your computer and might be the most important – if you do not know the sender do not open it. If you are anything like us and in business we get LOTS of unsolicited mail and quite possibly there might be something of interest but unless you can identify it don't open it.
The second way to do protect you and your data is to get yourself a good antivirus, we use one called BitDefender and take our recommendations from our good friends at TimeOut Computers.
What it ultimately comes down to is to think before you open an email especially if it has an attachment. If you don't recognise the sender – especially if it has an attachment – delete.
