Website Tips Series – Tip 10 Your Website Doesn’t Utilise HTTPS

[00:00:00] Hi it’s Martin from conceptual creative and today we are here to deliver a video in our Website tips series. Each video in the series covers a single topic and is no longer than a couple of minutes in length. We plan to release a new video in this series every week for the next 10 weeks on our website at www.conceptualcreative.design and also on our sister site at www.doesmywebsitesuck.com.au. If you have any questions or want to learn about something specific. Why not reach out to us via email sales@conceptualcreative.design. For now, lets look at this week’s Tip.

[00:00:47] Welcome to the last video in this series of website tips. We’ve covered a lot of great things in the past nine videos and today we are looking at one of the most important items in modern web site design. Today we talk about SSL certificates and data protection HTTPS is about data protection at its most fundamental.

[00:01:11] Who hasn’t seen items in the news of late about data security and data breaches. Whilst we won’t be going too in-depth about security in this video we will talk about the basics of SSL certificates. In 2017 there were more than 33 million hacked websites and that’s only the ones that were reported. Whilst an SSL certificate won’t protect you from things like weak passwords and persistent hacking attempts it will provide a deterrent and an additional layer of difficulty for those hacking attempts.

[00:01:46] An SSL certificate works in conjunction with your website to secure user data both yours and your visitors. This secure encryption of personal data assists your users to feel confident in dealing with your business. 84 percent of website visitors surveyed would abandon a purchase if data was not sent securely meaning failure to have an SSL certificate could impact your sales.

[00:02:16] Google has started flagging Web sites that do not have an SSL certificate warning website visitors to be careful on that website. In many cases you can even now get free SSL coverage via your website hosting provider. However the cost of an SSL certificate is far outweighed by the benefits of having one.

[00:02:41] The free certificates available are fine for your average non-shop based website. However, if you are selling products and collecting payment I recommend you look at getting a dedicated paid certificate for your site. There are of course different levels of certificates so make sure you do your research before making a purchase and get the right certificate for your particular website. If you have questions drop me an email, Happy to answer them.

[00:03:11] Okay so we’ve just completed the 10 tips in our first website tips series so let’s do a short review on what we covered. To be successful in business online we need to look at providing visitors easily with the information they need straight away. We need to make sure those visitors can easily navigate your Web site on multiple device types from desktop to mobile. We need to make sure we are not irritating our visitors with constant new windows, small and hard to read fonts and confusingly small buttons. We need to make sure our Web sites load fast and that our visitors are not kept waiting too long and finally make sure we take pride in protecting our client’s data and that we care about their user experience.

[00:03:57] Until next time thanks for watching our videos and if you have any questions send me an e-mail sales@conceptualcreative.design.

[00:04:07] Thank you!

For decades now I have either tinkered with or worked with the internet. It's a marvellous age that we live in where borders and races are separated by milliseconds. An age where you can travel the world and communicate independently of language, race, social status and more. I started my journey like anyone else who’s been online since the 90’s using a dial-up modem and I learned a lot about the world all be it very slowly. I’ve loved watching the technology of the world grow faster by the year with more and more interactivity. I eventually found my career in technology and specifically web technology and design. I have always loved business, technology, and design. My choice has allowed me to help grow other peoples business online. This site is a culmination of that life spent online it's my world where I can have my opinion and discuss my point of view. I am known by many in my inner circle to be very subtle and tactful (just kidding) in fact most people like to think of me more like a sledgehammer through a window kind of person. I have never really cared what people think of me or my opinion so long as they agree with it. Some might say that I am arrogant and other’s know this to be true. I've been known to not burn bridges rather than blow them up and move on when it comes to relationships. But for all my faults I am fiercely loyal to those who treat me right.
