Website Tips Series – Tip 6 Lose The Social Icons – Transcript

[00:00:01] Hi it’s Martin from Conceptual Creative. And today we are here to deliver a video in our Website Tips series. Each video in the series covers a single topic and is no longer than a couple of minutes in length. We plan to release a new video in this series every week for the next 10 weeks on our website at and also on our sister site at If you have any questions or want to learn about something specific why not reach out to us via email For now, lets look at this week’s Tip.

[00:00:48] In our last video we discussed keeping clients and visitors on our website for as long as possible. In this video, we are going to look at one of the biggest ways to lose your visitors to your own content and that is displaying your social media icons and connections. We all want our potential visitors and existing clients to like and follow us on social media but the positioning of these icons can be detrimental to your conversion rate.

[00:01:15] When you display your social media icons in a prominent position above the fold you are inviting your visitors to leave. So when we say “above the fold” we mean when your website first loads what you see on the screen without scrolling or anything like that. So a website should always be the centre of your online marketing strategy. So social media should link to your Web site and vice versa. I am not saying don’t have the links on your site at all. That would not make any sense. What I am suggesting is to make sure that they are not so prominent that all your visitors leave to go to Facebook.

[00:01:54] I suggest where possible place them in a not so prominent place. Now that could be at the top but not where they are distracting. You can easily use a plugin to put the links in your content, on the side of your site or below the main header content. The aim here is to make sure your clients and visitors get the chance to see your message before they attempted to leave the site. I do understand that many commercial themes only have one position in the header for these links but a good website designer or developer can easily move them for you. And if all else fails there are plenty of plugins available to do this job.

[00:02:36] When you’re developing your online strategy remember that all roads should lead to your Web site or a platform that you control. The reason you want to do this is because you can then capture that client’s details to your own list meaning that you don’t have to spend money with advertising to reach that client again.

[00:02:59] So that concludes this video. But in this section we’ve looked at positioning social media icons for effectiveness, in the next video, we’re going to look at the navigation structure and display. See you in the next video.

For decades now I have either tinkered with or worked with the internet. It's a marvelous age that we live in where borders and races are separated by milliseconds. An age where you can travel the world and communicate independently of language, race, social status and more. I started my journey like anyone else who’s been online since the 90’s using a dial-up modem and I learned a lot about the world all be it very slowly. I’ve loved watching the technology of the world grow faster by the year with more and more interactivity. I eventually found my career in technology and specifically web technology and design. I have always loved business, technology, and design. My choice has allowed me to help grow other peoples business online. This site is a culmination of that life spent online it's my world where I can have my opinion and discuss my point of view. I am known by many in my inner circle to be very subtle and tactful (just kidding) in fact most people like to think of me more like a sledgehammer through a window kind of person. I have never really cared what people think of me or my opinion so long as they agree with it. Some might say that I am arrogant and other’s know this to be true. I've been known to not burn bridges rather than blow them up and move on when it comes to relationships. But for all my faults I am fiercely loyal to those who treat me right.
